New York, Feb. 21 (AP)--a technical knockout by Salvy Tornabene started off the Daily News Welfare Association's 12th annual Golden Gloves tournament of champions tonight.

Tornabene's first-round knockout of Carl Hasinsky, another New Yorker, gave the crowd of about 5000 its first thrill. About 65 3 round bouts were on the card with athletes from New York and 19 other cities among the contestants.

Tony Saraullo, 126-pounder for Philadelphia in the open Division won his bout tonight by forfeit. He was the first middle Atlantic district fighter scheduled to.

Two of the Middle Atlantic entries drew byes into tomorrow afternoon's program. They were Bill Speary, 112-pound open champion from Nanticoke, and Tony Aiello, 118-pound open champion from Wilmington, Delaware.
